A LITTLE ABOUT NATIONAL EXAMINATION IN INDONESIA (a constructive reflection to know who we are indeed)

A month ago we faced a part of educational system in Indonesia to know a result of educational process we do for a year. On 20th till 24th April 2009, every student of high class in senior high school might be able to answer all questions made by a eligible team of BSNP (A National Service for Education Standardization) in Jakarta. Until here we understand that the team is a group of expert people who are able to estimate the competency of all students in many territories in Indonesia. What a great creations they are!
Jawa Pos, 10th June 2009 reported that BSNP held national examination for the second time for special 16 senior high schools. It was done – as said by Mr. Mungin, the director of BSNP – to know the real competency of students in that school. He believed that the bad result of national exam was not to indicate their real quality, so the second exam might be held soon. What a humanist policy it is made! If I was a president, I would like to invent him to my paradise to receive a honorary star from me. He has a right such as that for his achievement to improve the quality of Indonesian human resources.
Now we have a great duty to support his effort. Let’s contribute what we have. If we have something worth, let’s give it to him. Why must we do it? We want Mr. Mungin is not hopeless after receiving many critics and mocking from many element of Indonesian public. At least, we pray to Allah SWT to make him strong and consequent with what he assumes right to do. Amin.
Today we have other great duty to solve! Let’s think deeply why many people mock Mr. Mungin? What’s wrong with him or his policy? Based on news we read in some newspapers, Indonesian people actually prefer not to do national exam to doing it. They’re afraid of getting bad fate that forces their children are not able to continue their next study. Why? Because their children are fail to pass a national exam. In other side, they don’t want their children get a diploma of “paket C”. in their eyes, that diploma has a bad image that causes to bad fate in their children future. Now, what do you think?
I don’t want thinking any more about national exam. I was just happy when I found my neighbor’s son sang “Knocking a Heavens Door”, a popular song composed and sung by Guns a Roses hard. I just saw his body shocking as if he was lived individually. As if he was a person who created to enjoy this life without permissiveness of others. What a really free man he is!
I asked him “Hi Bro, - his name is Brodon Jackoya – what did you dream last night till you look so happy such a free man?” He answered “Will you say congratulation to me for my passing a national exam this year? This is my prestige! My parent will buy a new motorcycle for me!” I replied “Ok, congratulation Bro, keep singing and shocking!”
If Mr. Mungin was beside me, I would directly say to him “Mister, congratulation for you! You were caused many people of Indonesia to be glad all times. You were made many sons of Indonesia get motorcycle! Once again I declare that you’re suitable to be a hero of causing happiness. Next time, I will come to Mr. Jaya Suprana to ask a special record of MURI for you”. And I do believe that Mr. Mungin would answer it “Yes…yes…yes”.
Two days after I went to Paiton, a seaside town. I saw two boys swimming in the seaside while singing “Indonesia Raya”, an official song of our country, Indonesia. They sang it completely till a last poem of “ayo maju-maju”. I was confused by seeing the phenomenon such as those two boys. Why do many children happy today by singing loudly?
I waited their swimming for two hours. I might be patient to it in order to ask them directly why. “Yes, I must be glad; I have a perfect score of English lesson in my national exam yesterday. Beside that, my mother would never be angry to me. She was glad having a smart son like me” explained he while laughing loudly till his yellow teeth showed a reality of teeth quantity. “Mister, say congratulation to me! My score of Economy lesson is 9, so I can register to be a student of reputable university by using it” yelled his friend who I didn’t ask since my coming.
After they leaved me, I understood why they are happy. National exam. Yes, it was caused by a national exam. What a great a national exam is and the greatest one is Mr. Mungin. He is not angry or saying “Well, right now I step back from position of BSNP director” or he run to a top of Bromo mount and fall down freely as done by Kim, an ex-president of North Korea who killed his self because of public’s assumption of corrupting the wealth of country. I thanked Allah SWT who keeps him from the disturbance of mocking and anger of public of Indonesia.
After having a short conversation with two seaside two boys, I asked my self how could the one got a perfect score of English, and his competency of English speaking was not so good. It was indicated by my questioning him “What are you?” he answered “I swim in seaside”. Based on a good grammar it is a wrong answer. His answer is suitable with the question “What do you do?”. My confusing next in my deep heart was whether English grammar today was changed with new role. Or English grammar we use is different with one that used in other countries? The answer for both two question is I don’t know. Or as stated by Ebiet G. Ade, let the shocking grass answer!
Finally, whatever the confusing phenomenon of national exam in Indonesia was, many people is happy, many parents are glad till buy a special things for their beloved sons and daughter, and many children dare to dance freely. However many public assume about the quality of national exam, the show must go on. The life of ours must be better and better. Let everyone who wants yelling to yell. Let everyone who want being silent to enjoy their silence. And let me tell this story based on my real view as free as possible.
Let other people who choose to be confused with phenomenon of national exam. Our motto is the life is choice. And let Mr. Mungin to continue his policy of making national exam as a best way to evaluate a teaching learning process in Indonesia. In the name of public of Indonesia, I say “Long Live Mr. Mungin”.
